“Everyone likes birds. What wild
creature is more accessible with our
eyes and ears, as close to us and
everyone in the world as universal
as a bird?” – Sir David Attenborough

Explore the best birdwatching sites in South-West Australia and beyond with specialist bird and naturalist guide Maurice Hovens. Over 350 bird species occur in this corner of the world, and you could spot dozens of them in the Jarrah forests near Perth or the Wandoo woodlands of Dryandra in a single day alone! If you have more time to spent, why not travel on a tailor-made trip further afield to the coastal heathlands of Albany, Karri and Tingle forests around Walpole or the Mallee-heath and woodland communities of the Stirling Ranges to add many more to your life-list? Whichever location you choose, each offers ample opportunities for both seasoned birdwatchers and enthusiastic novices alike to find and observe Western Australia’s unique birdlife. As a long-time resident of the Perth Hills area I have all the local knowledge to bring you to the best sites to search for endemic specialties such as Carnaby’s (Zanda latirostris) and Baudin’s Black Cockatoo (Zanda baudinii), Western Rosella (Platycercus icterotis), Red-capped Parrot (Purpureicephalus spurius), Red-eared Firetail (Stagonopleura oculata), and Western Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus superciliosus), as well as other sought-after species such as the Western Yellow (Eopsaltria griseogularis) and White-breasted Robin (Quoyornis georgianus) or the Western Shriketit (Falcunculus leucogaster) to name a few, while providing insights into their behavior, habitat, and conservation status.

You can contact me for tailor-made custom itineraries designed to find your target bird species or join one of the group birding tours, which are limited to just 3 guests to ensure a personal experience, complete with shared use of spotting scope, binoculars, and field guides that enhance your viewing pleasure. My bird watching tours sometimes include short bushwalks, on which to look out for bushtucker, orchids or hard-to-find endemic marsupials such as echidnas, numbats, and honey possums, making each outing an adventure that connects you not only with the avian life but also the rich diversity of flora and fauna that defines this unique region of Australia.

Six Seasons //Birak//Bunuru//Djeran//Makuru//Djilba//Kambarang

For thousands of years, seasonal changes have guided the lives of First Nations people throughout Australia. Local knowledge about the variations in weather, plants in flower and abundance of bush foods available provided a holistic system that ensured the sustainable use of natural resources for future generations. The Six Seasons reflect the deep connection of the Noongar People to their land, and their intimate knowledge about these seasons and the values they represent serve as my inspiration while observing birds that live on it. Each season has different things to offer, and I’m looking forward to showing you exciting and unexpected encounters no matter the time of the year.
